Fitness Class Leaderboard
Digital leaderboards displaying real-time performance data can enhance the experience of group exercise class participants.
The challenge is to curate the most useful and engaging data, and present it in a simple and fun way.
Who's going to use this?
The Athlete
The Athlete wants to be in first place. When he can’t exercise outside because of weather or a busy schedule, he hits the group class hard. He is competitive and confident, and seeing his avatar pull ahead of the pack on the leaderboard makes him work even harder.
The Regular
The Regular attends class several times a week to maintain health and manage stress. The leaderboard motivates her to push on and focus on the exercise, instead of worrying about the work she has to do when she gets home. She keeps one eye on the amount of time remaining, and the other on pace to make sure she isn’t slacking.
The Beginner
The Beginner just signed up for the gym after a couple of years in the fog. She is not at the top of her game (yet), and feels like just showing up is an accomplishment. The leaderboard is intimidating, so she wants to keep her avatar obscure until her pace improves. Her eyes are glued to calories burned and time remaining, so she almost misses when her avatar moves into 5th place. She will upload an avatar picture for the next class!
Who are the competitors?
Peloton
This system is great for those who like in-depth data, like the experienced athlete. To a beginner or the regular, this data-heavy interface might be overwhelming, and it distracts from the leaderboard.
Performance IQ
Competition is front and center in this system. While it also has real-time data, engagement is driven more by the gamification of the race. The anonymous avatars might be a turn off for someone seeking acknowledgment for their hard work, and the lackluster environment might be more depressing than motivating.
Solution
Create an experience that visualizes performance data in a way that motivates, engages, and encourages friendly competition.
The athlete can focus on their position on the class display and the beginner can focus on performance details on the personal display.
